Women’s volleyball tops Thomas, advances

FARMINGTON – The University of Maine at Farmington women’s volleyball team advanced to the North Atlantic Conference semifinals today as the third-ranked Beavers topped No. 6 Thomas College 3-0 (25-14, 25-10, 25-20) at Dearborn Gymnasium.

Jenna Rowan (Kittery, ME) collected a team-high seven kills with four service aces and four digs for the Beavers, who evened their record at 10-10 with a trip to Husson University next Saturday to face No. 2 Maine Maritime Academy in the semifinals. The other semifinal will feature No. 4 Green Mountain College versus the host and top-ranked Eagles. The Terriers finished their season at 4-21.

Shannon Mitchell (Portsmouth, NH), Danielle O’Brien (Calais, ME) and Emily Beebe (Bristol, RI) each recorded five kills in the win. Brittany Palmer (Peru, ME) paced Farmington in digs with eight, while Caitlin Flaherty (Pembroke, MA) dished out 22 assists.

Sarah Marckoon (Lamoine, ME) led Thomas with three kills and four solo blocks with Heather Holmes (West Wareham, MA) adding two kills, three digs and three assists. Marckoon and Holmes each also had an assist.
