Winter Sowing

Winter seed sowing in clear plastic containers that act as mini greenhouses is an easy, inexpensive way to start seedlings.  Come learn how to do it, and start some seedlings of your own!  The program will be presented by wonderful local gardener, Rhonda Marquis, on Sunday, March 5, at 1PM at the Mt. Vernon Community Center.  Materials will be provided, but it would be helpful if you bring a gallon milk jug & some seeds to share.  Limit is 15 participants, and pre-registration is required.  To pre-register, call (293-2565) or email (librarian@drshawlibrary.org) the Dr. Shaw Memorial Library in Mt. Afternoon With an Author

Come hear a talk by local author David Wilson on Saturday, October 22, at 4PM at the Mt. Vernon Community Center, 2 Main St., Mt. Improv Theater in Mt. Vernon

The Marti Stevens Interactive Improvisational Theater group will perform scenarios about challenges older Mainers encounter as they live & age in their communities.  Scenes will be followed by a chance for the audience to ask questions of the players "in character" and to suggest possible solutions to the challenges presented.  The Marti Stevens group's shows on this topic are funded by Spectrum Generations, through an AARP grant.  Join us for this free event on Saturday, Sept. 17 at 4pm, at the Mt. What a Story!

Thursday, August 25 at 4pm, at the Mt. Vernon Community Center, the Dr. Shaw Memorial Library is hosting a talk by Rob and Holly Groom (retired doctor and teacher from Fayette) who spend 10 months each year in Kenya helping to save lives and better the lives of children and women by providing medical care and teaching sewing skills.  Come hear them talk about their many experiences doing this work in Kenya.

Stories from the Metroplex

Anyone in Mt. Vernon, Vienna, Fayette area (and beyond) is invited to share brief stories, musings, or even odd, sweet, or funny bits of writing they've come across.  Ideas for what you might share:  stories from childhood, how you came to be here, something you wrote for school and have kept over the years, passages from personal correspondence, hopes for future adventures.  We ask that stories are family-friendly and are no longer than five minutes long. Community Poetry Reading

Advance Directives

A workshop on Advance Directives will be held on Wednesday, September 15 at 4:00pm, at the Mt. Vernon Community Center. The speaker is Jackie Fournier, a Palliative Care Nurse Practitioner from Androscoggin Home Health Care & Hospice.  If you plan on attending, we require that you wear a mask (and we will try to keep doors open, for ventilation), and we ask that you pre-register with us, either by phone (293-2565) or email (librarian@drshawlibrary.org).
