Update, Monday, Nov. 7:
INDUSTRY – Ed Boyd believes the fire and smoke he woke up to Sunday night started at the woodstove in the living room.

At about 8:40 p.m. fire fighters from six towns responded to the blaze that gutted the single-story home at 503 Rand Road. Ed and Carolyn Boyd and their children Leigha, 16 and Sean, 15 lived at the mobile home that Ed had expanded with additions over 18 years. Two dogs perished in the blaze.

This morning, Ed Boyd with his children sifted through the charred remains of their three-bedroom home.

He pointed up with a bandaged finger to the window he had to punch out to escape the fire and smoke. Boyd was the only one home and had fallen asleep early because of an early shift Monday morning. A smoke alarm sounded along with the family’s two dogs, which woke him up.

“There was a little smoke and I thought it was the stove,” he said. But soon, too much smoke filled the bedroom to be a little back draft from the stove pipe. “The smoke was rolling across the ceiling and everything was all a glow.”

He started punching at the window above the bed for an escape. One dog was in the corner of the bedroom next to him and once the window’s glass was removed he tried to reach down and get the dog out. But the frightened dog had gotten quiet and, groping in the dark, he couldn’t find him. As the smoke grew thicker and the fire’s glow brighter, Boyd said he had no choice but to lift himself out though the glassless window frame. In the dark confusion, his hands found four big nails pounded into the exterior side of the house under the window.

“I used the nails and sort of slid down to the ground,” he said. He found out later he had cut the tip of his finger off getting out. “I wasn’t thinking,” he added. He ran around the side of the house to the big bow window and broke it out to try and save the dogs. Explosions, in staccato-like bangs, possibly from ammunition or other flammable items, began erupting as Boyd tried to get the dogs to come out.

Not being able to see or hear the dogs and the fire now running throughout the house, he ran around to the other side of the home, jumped into his truck and drove next door to Percy Frazier’s house to call for help.

The Boyd’s neighbor across the street, Fred Swan, said he just had a feeling “something just wasn’t right” when he got up to look out the window.

“I saw fire shooting out from the house, everything was on fire and then I heard a boom,” Swan said. He quickly got dressed and ran over to see if he could help, but Boyd had already gone next door. Swan went home and grabbed four sweaters because he thought the family may need them on this chilly, clear night.

Carolyn and Leigha Boyd had been out shopping for the day. Sean and friends had been at the movie theater in Farmington celebrating his 15th birthday when they got the call their house was on fire.

“My grandmother called and said, ‘You’ve got to get home, your house is on fire. It’s engulfed,'” Leigha Boyd remembers. This morning she pointed to a blackened metal box and disconnected pipe scrap, “The old stove was in the living room,” she said and added, “everything is gone.”

Gratefully, Ed Boyd said the home was insured.

Carolyn’s sister, Cathy Corey wants to hold a benefit supper for the family. The Daily Bulldog will update this story and other pages with details, as soon as we get them, along with other ways to help the family with donations as many readers have asked how to help the Boyds.
