UMF baseball team drops two in NAC doubleheader

FARMINGTON – The University of Maine at Farmington baseball team closed out its North Atlantic Conference regular season by losing a NAC doubleheader to Husson University 8-7 in eight innings and 17-9 today at Hippach Field.

The Beavers (4-20 overall, 3-13 in the NAC) are scheduled to close out their regular season with a twinbill at home versus Bates College Tuesday at 3 p.m. Farmington holds the fourth seed in the upcoming NAC tournament in Glens Falls, N.Y. The Eagles (27-11, 13-3) are the No. 2 seed in the NAC tournament.

In the first game, Jake Arthers (Belfast, ME) scored on a Kyle Vanidestine (Bangor, ME) single in the eighth inning to push the Eagles past Farmington 8-7.

The Beavers trailed 7-2 through four-and-a-half innings, but bounced back to tie the contest. Matt Levine (Pelham, NH) plated Ethan Jean (Jackson, ME) with a single in the seventh to send the game into extra innings.

Pat Howell (Nobleboro, ME) slammed two home runs and drove in five runs to lead Farmington, while Levine singled twice and doubled and Phineas Peake (Penobscot, ME) recorded three singles with an RBI.

Nick Arthers (Belfast, ME) singled and homered with three RBI for Husson with Jeff Miller (Veazie, ME) doubling and hitting a solo home run and Tom Crews (Bangor, ME) clubbing a solo blast. Jake Arthers also had two hits and two RBI.

Dennis Graham (Miramichi, N.B.) picked up the win in relief with two innings of one-hit ball and a strikeout.

Bill Ridge (South Portland, ME) went 7.1 innings in the loss, scattering 10 hits with three walks and four strikeouts.

In the nightcap, Graham singled three times, homered and drove in six runs and Corey Cushing (Brewer, ME) singled four times with five RBI as Husson rallied from an early 7-0 hole to get past the Beavers 17-9.

Ethan Guerette (Wales, ME) chipped in two singles and a double, while Miller singled twice and knocked in two runs and Vanidestine singled and doubled. The Eagles trailed 9-6 after three innings, but posted seven scores in the top of the fourth to take the lead. Graham hit a three-run homer in the fourth.

Ryan Walker (Hollis, ME) earned the victory with 5.1 innings in relief with four hits allowed and a walk.

Tyler Hanson (Sanford, ME) drove in three runs in the opening frame for the Beavers with a two-run single and a bases-loaded walk, while Howell singled and doubled and Josh Garneau (South Portland, ME) each singled twice. Garneau drove in two runs.
