WILTON – During the past week, Fit Girls held a Summer Camp at Kineowatha Park in Wilton. The participating girls engaged in a week of running and walking, wholesome games and activities, and the reading of a story by Cynthia Lord called Half a Chance.
In the story, the young girl who was the main character, moved to a community on a lake in New Hampshire. Kineowatha Park provided an ideal backdrop for the camp. It was a great place for the girls to share the book Half a Chance, which is a story of kindness, friendship and learning to navigate relationships. On Thursday, the Fit Girls received a visit by the author, Cynthia Lord, who answered questions and signed their books which they created that followed the storyline.
Under the direction of Deb Aseltine of Wilton, the summer camp mission is to promote a healthy and active lifestyle that includes regular exercise for the body, the mind and heart. It also gave the girls a real camp experience. Aseltine said the “running and reading program builds self-esteem and confidence and helps girls connect with, and give back to, their community.”
Aseltine would like to thank the Healthy Community Coalition of Franklin County who provided support to bring this summer camp to the girls in our communities. Also, she would like to acknowledge Frank Donald of the Wilton Recreation Department for the support and use of facilities, and the assistance from a very kind friend for providing all of the Half a Chance books for the girls to read. In addition, Aseltine would like to thank volunteers Mallory Parker and Adele Hardy.
The Fit Girls after school program will begin in September at Academy Hill and Cape Cod Hill Schools for 4th and 5th graders. For more information about Fit Girls, please contact Deb Aseltine at wiltonfitgirls@gmail.com or 645-9648.
