FARMINGTON – You will believe invisible rabbits exist when Sandy River Players presents Mary Chase’s classic comedy, Harvey, at the University of Maine at Farmington’s Alumni Theater. The production opens on Jan. 14 and runs through Jan. 23.

Best known as a movie starring Jimmy Stewart, the play opened on Broadway in 1944 and ran just over four years. The story revolves around Elwood P Dowd, whose best friend is a rabbit over six feet tall named Harvey who is invisible to everyone else. Elwood’s sister Veta and niece Myrtle Mae try to have him committed to a sanitarium, but Harvey has other plans. Harvey is a pooka, a creature of celtic folklore who can take on many different shapes. He delights in causing confusion in people, which certainly happens on this stage.

Directed by Dan Woodward, Harvey features a cast of familiar faces to audiences of recent SPR productions such as And Then There Were None, Oliver! and Fiddler on the Roof. Among them are Dan Robbins, Deb Mason, Robin Lisherness, Mark Lemos, Rebekkah Church and Natalie Bean.

Show dates are January 14, 15, 21 and 22 at 7:30 pm and January 16 and 23 at 2 pm at Alumni Theater on Academy Street in Farmington. Admission is $12 for adults, $10 for seniors and children, UMF students $8 with ID. Tickets are on sale at Devaney, Doak and Garrett Booksellers in Farmington. For reservations call 779-7084.
