KINGFIELD – The Stadler Gallery will conclude this year’s summer cycle with exhibitions of new works by Abby Shahn of Solon, Maine, and of large photographs by Alice Wilkinson of Deer Isle, Maine, both on view from Aug. 29 through Sept. 18.

Abby Shahn: “Cacophony prologue” oil on canvas 4×3’

“New Paintings, etc” will show the many different projects Shahn has been working on during the past two years. The large paintings of knots render her version of the ubiquitous yellow ribbons that are being seen everywhere and go back to an old fascination with drawing knots and weaving. The small paintings represent or suggest faces, expressing Shahn’s fantasy of a wall of paintings staring back at the viewer. There will also be pottery made in collaboration with Amber Lambke where Shahn painted on the pieces with terra sigillata and glazes. And lastly, Shahn will be showing a series of imaginary globes or worlds.

Alice Wilkinson: “Barbara Hepworth’s Garden” giclee print 16×20”

As the title “Mostly Outside” indicates, Wilkinson’s work depicts predominantly the narrative of outdoor scenes with their ever recurring question whether they actually show what is occurring and whether the image reflects what she thought she perceived. She finds stimulation in the surprising beauty of her surroundings, while vague reminiscence triggers her curiosity. None of her pictures are staged or posed. As she puts it: “What is on the wall is as close as it can be to what I saw through the lens.”

Wilkinson invited her husband John Wilkinson to share her space, and several of his sculptures will be on view as well.

The Stadler Gallery  is open daily from noon to 4 pm and by appointment. Please view www.stadlergallery.com for more information.
