FARMINGTON – SugarWood Gallery will be host to two local artists making their debut.

Harriet Chassie

Sally Rees-Speich and Harriet Chassie have been taking art classes together for 4 years, are good friends, and it seemed natural that they show their work together during the month of September at SugarWood Gallery.

An Open House Reception to welcome the two artists will be conducted Friday, Sept. 4 from 4 to 7 PM and again on Saturday, Sept. 5 from 11 AM to 3 PM. The public is invited and refreshments will be served.

Sally Rees-Speich

Both Sally and Harriet have taken classes off and on over many years but have supported each other in staying the course more consistently during the last four years. They enjoy spending the time with other people who enjoy the artistic process and have come to feel close to their teacher, Joyce Dubay, and many of the artists that get together under Joyce’s kind scrutiny once a week.

Sally thinks of painting as a mini-vacation, a time to stop worrying and working and to be in the moment. The process of watching a painting evolve from an idea fascinates her. Many times in the middle of the process she hates what is there but then this miraculous event occurs and she begins to see what was in her mind emerge. While she does not consider herself an accomplished artist she does want to share with others her work as an example of the simple joy of creation. Working around other artists is not only supportive but she gets to see different styles in action. She says “it is a great learning experience and is just so important to keeping me on an even keel.”

Harriet started painting in the 1970s when she took oil painting lessons from Anna Kirshner. She painted for several years, entering her paintings in the Sidewalk Art Festival during what was Moonlight Madness, and in the Farmington Fair Exhibition Hall. She took time off from painting to raise her children and is now back on the art scene enjoying oil painting, watercolors, and photography. She likes to focus on ocean and floral scenes and enjoys all the beauty around her in nature.

SugarWood Gallery is located at 248 Broadway in Farmington. Hours are 10 AM to 5:30 PM Monday thru Friday and 10 AM to 4 PM Saturday and Sunday.
