FARMINGTON – An opening reception will be held today from 5-7 p.m. for the University of Maine at Farmington Art Gallery’s exhibit “Eklektikos.”

“Eklektikos,” an UMF art department faculty exhibit, features work from Jeremy Edwards, J. Thomas R. Higgins, Anthony Holmquist, Christopher Lavery, Dawn Nye, Elizabeth Olbert, Katrazyna Randall, and Barbara Sullivan.

Jeremy Edwards is a visiting UMF art faculty member from Paris, France. A designer, photographer and artist, Edwards is known throughout Europe for his minimalist and functional furniture designs. He has worked in the design industry in England, France, Italy and Sweden, and solo exhibitions of his pieces have been featured at the Boijmans Museum, in Rotterdam; the Architectural Museum, in Stockholm; the VIA gallery, in Paris; and the Museum of Decorative Arts, in Copenhagen.

His most recent book “Objets Synonymes” (Editions Jean-Michel Place 2006) takes given forms and functions to produce new objects.

“People see design as something that is only produced by professionals and found in magazines,” said Edwards. “But everyone is capable of it, and design is all around us.” Edwards’ notable photographic essay “Objets Anonymes” (Editions Jean-Michel Place 2001) is a compilation of objects assembled by everyday people to offer makeshift solutions to practical problems.

Edwards, born in Liverpool, England, received his degree at Brighton University in England, and received The Design Report Award in Milan, 2004.

The show runs through to Oct. 19. The UMF Art Gallery is open from noon to 4 p.m., Tuesday through Sunday and is located at 246 Main Street in Farmington. No admission is charged. For More Information: email: elizabeth.olbert@maine.edu or call: 207-778-7002
