University of Maine at Farmington Musical Ensembles Open to New Membership
FARMINGTON – The University of Maine at Farmington Community Orchestra, Concert Band and Community Chorus are open to new membership for the 2010–2011 academic year. Members of the public interested in joining a UMF ensemble are invited to attend any of the following registration/rehearsal sessions held at Nordica Auditorium in UMF’s Merrill Hall:
UMF Community Orchestra, 7 p.m., Wednesday, Sept. 1
UMF Concert Band, 7 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 2
UMF Community Chorus, 6:30 p.m., Monday, Sept. 13
The UMF Community Orchestra, conducted by Trond Saeverud, is open to community and UMF instrumentalists of all levels. String players are especially welcome. No audition is required. The winter concert, Saturday, Dec. 11, will feature two master works: Beethoven’s “Piano Concerto No. 5” (the “Emperor” concerto) with UMF Professor Steven Pane as soloist, and Schubert’s “Symphony No. 9,” known as the “Great.” Rehearsals are held Wednesdays from 7 to 9:30 p.m., beginning Sept. 1.
Conducted by Anita Jerosch, the UMF Concert Band is comprised of community members and UMF students and performs a wide variety of standard concert band repertoire from movie scores and marches to classical wind ensemble pieces. New players are welcome, especially trumpeters. The winter concert will be presented Thursday, Nov. 18. Rehearsals are held Thursdays, from 7 to 9:30 p.m., beginning Sept. 2. The band is also looking for donations of gently used instruments for UMF students who do not have their own.
Under the direction of Bruce McInnes, the UMF Community Chorus celebrates its 30th year of bringing together community members from throughout western Maine with UMF students, faculty and staff to sing classic and contemporary works from the choral repertoire. “Mozart’s Requiem” will be the featured work of the winter concert, to be performed Saturday, Dec. 4 and Sunday, Dec. 5. Rehearsals are held Mondays, from 6:30 to 9 p.m., beginning Sept. 13.
