FARMINGTON – Healthy Community Coalition’s Work Healthy! award program recognized Franklin Savings Bank, Star Barn, Farmington Hannaford, United Way of Tri Valley Area, University of Maine at Farmington, Mt. Blue Regional School District, NotifyMD, LEAP, Work First, Bangor Savings Bank, Camden National Bank, SeniorsPlus, Lewiston Sun Journal, Western Maine Community Action, Franklin Community Health Network, and TD BankNorth for their work on promoting good health for their employees as part of Work Healthy!

The awards were presented at the June 17th breakfast meeting of the Franklin County Chamber of Commerce. The Work Healthy! award program is focused on encouraging businesses and organizations in greater Franklin County to support tobacco-free lifestyles, encourage physical activity and promote healthy eating.

Applicants to the program, businesses or organizations, have realized that a healthier workforce is very beneficial to all involved. It benefits employees to have their employer promoting health. For the employer this translates into reduced absenteeism, lower health care costs, improved productivity, and healthy, happier employees.

Blue Regional School District, Sharon Cullenberg and Ann Allison of Notify MD, Cinder Savage and Sarah Ellis of LEAP, Linda LaRue-Kenniston and Buzz Davis of Work First, Becky Davis-Allen and Heidi Elliott of Bangor Savings Bank, Dyan Macomber of Camden National Bank, Karen Pollard of SeniosPlus, Ann Bryant of the Lewiston Sun Journal, Susan DeRusha and Patty Ladd of WMCA, Tom Hagerstrom of FCHN. Mary Nelson of TD BankNorth could not be present.

Awards ranged in levels from merit recognition for a basic tobacco policy, to bronze & silver awards presented to applicants who submitted for all category areas. Many businesses said they are going for the gold in 2010.

Healthy Community Coalition provides interested worksites free technical assistance, educational materials, and support to employers in their attempt to promote healthy behaviors and lifestyles for their employees.
