FARMINGTON – University of Maine at Farmington student William Glidden was recently awarded a $1,000 scholarship by the Maine Higher Education Assistance Foundation. A senior majoring in business economics at UMF, Glidden is a native of North Berwick and a graduate of Noble High School.

“William is a very motivated student and so deserving of this honor,” said Waleck Dalpour, UMF professor of business and chair of the UMF Division of Social Sciences, Business and Global Studies. “He has really committed himself to the highest level of academic success at UMF. His openness to new ideas and professional attitude will make him a valuable part of any organization.”

Student scholarship recipients must be a Maine high school graduate majoring in a business related area in their second, third, or fourth year, and be in good academic standing. MeHEAF grants are awarded to students from 11 Maine colleges annually, with a total of $260,000 in scholarships distributed since 1990. This year’s award was presented by Pamela M. Green, director of member services at Maine Bankers Association.

The Maine Higher Education Assistance Foundation was established in the 1950s by a wide range of banks, businesses, community organizations and individuals to support a guarantee fund for student loans. In 1990, the MeHEAF trustees, in keeping with the original intent of the founding members, initiated the scholarship program funded by the return on the original loan guarantee funds. MeHEAF is administered by the Maine Bankers Association 489 Congress Street, Portland.
