When marketing is not enough

AUGUSTA – Nancy Marshall, principal of Nancy Marshall Communications, is sharing her 25 years of marketing experience with Maine, conducting presentations around the state that communicate the value of adopting an overall strategy that ensures all marketing efforts – from media relations to advertising – are communicating the same messages and working toward the same goal.

“There are so many tools in our marketing arsenals these days,” says Marshall. “Think about social media. Just three years ago, it was just a blip on the radar screen. That’s why it’s critical that businesses adopt an overall strategy that coordinates all of these tools. The development of a strong brand is an important first step.”

Yesterday, Marshall shared her “Five Tips for Evaluating Your PR Program and Developing a Strategic Plan” with the Piscataquis County Economic Development Council. She also recently presented at The Maine TTA Center’s Engaged Communities: Growing Strong Children Conference in Augusta, and the Northeast Winter Sports Summit at Sunday River.

As part of each presentation, participants are given the basic tools to create their own version of The Marshall Plan, a branded five-year marketing strategy Marshall has developed for a variety of industries ranging from financial institutions and tourism-related businesses to law firms and academia.

Marshall says, “All communications and marketing programs boil down to three elements: key messages, the groups of individuals you are trying to influence, and the tools you use to communicate key messages to these groups.”

Her five tips break down into how to: identify target audiences; develop message maps to ensure the same messages are communicated consistently; create marketing maps that chart how each target audience is being communicated to and how frequently; develop relationships with the media; and measure results.

In addition, Marshall demystifies the branding process, providing step-by-step instruction on how to create a compelling and honest brand. She also provides basic guidelines in establishing value and understanding of a product or service through the branding process.
