Students in the sixth grade participate in an event on National Geographic’s enormous map of Africa.

STRONG – More than 900 square feet of educational fun.

A massive map of Africa was in the Strong Elementary School gymnasium Tuesday, courtesy of the Maine Geographical Alliance. That organization paid to have the map, one of two owned by National Geographic, tour schools in Maine.

The tarp-like map is 35 feet by 26 feet and weighs 108 pounds, according to Maine Geographic Alliance Co-coordinator Susan Lahti. She, along with her husband Eric Lahti, run the activities and transport the map around the state with a pickup truck.

Crafted out of vinyl, the map is an enlarged replica of a pullout poster from a 2005 issue of National Geographic magazine. It is one of two maps of Africa, with the other currently in Texas. National Geographic also maintaining giant maps of Asia and North America.

Students participated in a variety of games and activities based on the map, including exploring locations with the help of a navigator and a safari.

Its next stop will be Cascade Brook School.
