FARMINGTON – Thirty-five bicyclists took off in the Tour de Farmington from the Front Street parking lot for a ride to enjoy the area’s fall foliage and visits to farms along the way on this chilly but sunny morning.

This, the first year of this event, 25 to 27 riders took the 19-mile loop and another more experienced group of 8 to 10 cyclists went on the 70-mile loop through Franklin County. All participants will be returning to Meetinghouse Park in Farmington.

Jeremy Smith and other local bicycle enthusiasts, along with Western Maine Alliance, Center for Community GIS and High Peaks Alliance, organized the event to promote exercise while riding through fall in all its glory and locally-grown, organic food with stops at area farms. Cyclists will be able to purchase the farmers’ fresh vegetables which will be transported back to the finish where food and a concert will end the tour.

Farmington Police Chief Jack Peck led the cyclists from the start on Front Street and across Center Bridge through West Farmington to begin to tour. Ages of the riders ranged from preteen to senior.

“We’re pleased with the turnout and it’s a beautiful day,” said Tanya Swain of Western Maine Alliance.
