Firefighters from the New Vineyard Fire Department and Farmington Fire Rescue Department work to contain a blaze at a small camp off of Route 27, Thursday evening.

NEW VINEYARD – A structure fire already fully involved when reported to local area firefighters was only one scene of a series of calls emergency personnel responded to Thursday evening, as slick roads caused accidents.

The fire was reported in the New Vineyard area at 7:25 p.m. Thursday, with crews scrambling to track calls from the area that a large fire was seen above the trees. Eventually located at 784 Softail Boulevard, a small dirt road off of Route 27, dispatchers issued mutual aid calls to departments in Farmington, Strong, Industry, Temple, to assist New Vineyard. Eventually calls to the Industry department were called off after it became obvious the building could not be saved.

The structure was a two-story house owned by Wayne Fletcher, of New Vineyard, and was apparently unoccupied at the time of the fire, said New Vineyard Fire Chief Douglas Churchill.  Firefighters instead worked to stop the fire from spreading into nearby pine trees. No one was reported hurt in the blaze, the cause of which remains unknown at this time.

While at the scene, firefighters received reports of two accidents in the Industry area, as motorist contended with snowy conditions and slick roads. Two accidents were reported within minutes of each other on the West Mills Road in Industry area due to slick roads.

Another call came in from Mile Hill Road in New Sharon when a vehicle reportedly went off the road at about 10:05 p.m.
