FARMINGTON – The public library’s Mystery Night, a benefit for the roof project set for Friday night, is sold out, organizers said today.

For the lucky 48 ticket holders, however, Mystery Night promises to be a murder mystery whodunit to end all whodunits, after Mayor Ty D. Proffitz is found dead in the library. Yes, the library.

“Murder at Crooke’s Crossing,” a fictitious murder mystery set in a library in Virginia, features 10 characters including Detective Richard (Dick) Tionary, played by Franklin County’s probate judge, Dick Morton of Farmington, who will be using his deductive powers of reasoning all night to help guests of this mystery figure out who killed Mayor Proffitz.

The cast of characters includes real life local booksellers, teachers, a politician, a nurse, a librarian and more who, in full costume, will play their roles to the hilt while dropping clues to Proffitz’s demise along the way, said Barb Marshall, who came up with this fundraising idea.

“I’ve always wanted to be involved in a murder mystery,” she said laughing. After reading the script on the Internet, she purchased the rights from its author to have it performed here and then scouted for its cast of characters.

The paying public will work in groups and will be able to interact with the suspects and detective a couple of times during the course of the evening, which, Marshall also noted, features very good things to snack on to keep the little gray cells working. In the end, everyone gets together and tries to piece it together and solve this murder most foul.

“It’s a neat place to have it and I think it’s going to be a lot of fun,” Marshall said.
