ROCKPORT – A man serving a 15-year sentence for killing a Wilton man in 1998 died at a medical facility in Rockport Sunday. The death is not believed to be suspicious, according to state officials.

Steven Holloway, 51, had no known fixed address in January 1998 when Albert “Sonny” Parker Jr. died in his Wilton home after he was struck with a hatchet and shot with a hunting rifle. According to court documents, after questioning witnesses, police interviewed Holloway at a motel in Farmington. He eventually was arrested and admitted to killing Parker, leading to Holloway pleading guilty to the charge of murder, conditional upon the resolution of an appeal to the Maine Supreme Court.

However, in October 2000, the Maine Supreme Court ruled that statements Holloway made to police were inadmissible, leading to that plea being withdrawn. Instead, Holloway pleaded guilty to manslaughter and was sentenced to 35 years at the Maine State Prison in Warren, with all but 15 years suspended, as well as six years of probation. According to Maine Department of Corrections representative Scott Fish, Holloway was scheduled to be released on Oct. 13, 2018.

Holloway died at 6 a.m. on Sunday, Oct. 19 at Pen Bay Medical Center in Rockport, according to Fish. The circumstances surrounding his death was reviewed by the Maine State Police and state medical examiner, as is standard for prisoner deaths.

According to Department of Public Safety representative Stephen McCausland, Holloway’s death was not suspicious. Holloway had cancer.
