Hundreds of students attend career fair today

3 mins read

Students from eight area high schools began the 13th Western Maine Career Fair held today at the University of Maine at Farmington by listening to words of wisdom given by Gary Perlson and state Sen. Tom Saviello. The students then attended two sessions in which presenters detailed their career paths.

FARMINGTON – More than 500 students from eight area high schools each listened to two of 40 presenters tell about their careers at the 13th Western Maine Career Partnership.

Schools participating: Mt. Abram, Mt. Blue, Carrabec, Livermore Falls, Rangeley, Madison, Jay and Mt. Valley high schools bused their mostly third year students to the event held on the University of Maine at Farmington campus.

Keynote speaker, state Sen. Tom Saviello gave students his top 10 tips: smile at everything you do; look at more than just what’s in front of you; really listen to what people are telling you; learn how to be, not how to do; have fun; find a mentor; when faced with a crossroads, take it; read, write, and find passion in what you do.

Career counselor, Gary Perlson said of the 10,000 occupation titles out there, the average person can expect to have five different jobs in his or her lifetime and it’s projected that three of those five jobs haven’t even been invented yet.

Perlson advised students to take advantage of the career day’s offerings by asking questions and listening. Then students attended two sessions of their choice that featured two presenters in related careers. Organizers want to give a special thanks to UMF and to Poland Spring for sponsoring the Career Fair and for donating bottled water for all the speakers and participants.
