JAY – Parents, friends and teachers were on hand Sunday, to cheer on the Jay High School’s Class of 2009.

Forty-three Seniors graduated at the ceremony, held in the school’s gymnasium, with hundreds. As is traditional in Jay, the commencement was simple and to-the-point, with class speakers wishing their classmates well.

“My fellow graduates, be proud of what you’ve done,” Class President Elizabeth LeBlanc said. “I pray you all live a blessed life.”

The class motto was a famous quote from philosopher Lao Tse, who said “the Journey of a Thousand Miles Begins With One Step.” The speakers, Salutatorian Liz LeBlanc and Valedictorian Katie Hall, touched on this theme. LeBlanc talked about the importance of high school as a first step noting that, “adversity has made us stronger. Hall asked students to remember the little things, recalling a series of inside jokes, small tragedies and little lessons.

“Don’t remember the days or weeks,” she said. “Remember the moments.”

Students Danielle Walsh and Megan Wolf also performed “I’ll Always Be Back,” by Kayla Maurais, prior to the presentation of diplomas by Principal Joe Moore, Superintendent Robert Wall and School Board Chairman Mary Redmond-Luce. The school band performed the music for the graduate’s march.

The graduates, led by Class Marshals Bryndi Richards and Victoria Quirrion, check in with the faculty prior to the march. Not pictured is Class Marshal Kyle DeMilo, who led the procession.
