FARMINGTON – A Jay man is in jail today, after he allegedly left the scene of an accident that occurred on the North Chesterville Road Saturday afternoon.

Kenneth Tourtelotte, 34, of Jay, was charged with leaving the scene of an accident, operating a vehicle after habitual offender revocation, operating a vehicle while under the influence and violating the conditions of his release. He will likely appear in court today for an initial appearance.

Police say that Tourtelotte was operating a vehicle on the North Chesterville Road at 3:45 p.m. on July 25, when the vehicle failed to negotiate a turn and struck the corner of a guardrail, driving into an embankment.

According to Farmington Police Officer Ted Neil, a witness heard the crash and came running. A plate number and description were recorded. Roughly 30 minutes later, Farmington police say they administered a field sobriety test on Tourtelotte after his vehicle was pulled over, which they say he failed. He was then arrested.

Tourtelotte and a passenger reportedly suffered minor injuries in the accident. In Maine, vehicle accidents which result in personal injury must be reported to the police.

Neil said that Tourtelotte’s license had been revoked and that he was classified as a habitual offender. The police say that preexisting conditions of release were also violated when Tourtelotte allegedly consumed alcohol.
