Students participate in the second annual Hop-a-thon at W.G. Mallett School.

FARMINGTON – Kindergarten and first-grade classes at W.G. Mallett School participated in the second annual “Hop-a-thon” today, with clear skies allowing the event to be held on the front lawn.

The event was first held last year, with students gathering pledges and donations for the Pine Tree Camp. Established in 1945, the program offers children and adults with disabilities a summer camp experience. The camp is in Rome, Maine, on a 280-acre piece of property on North Pond, and has been designed to offer a variety of fun activities for campers, including swimming, fishing, boating, outdoor games, kayaking, and arts and crafts.

Wearing paper bunny ears, the students hopped for three-minute stretches, their leaps counted by volunteers, ed techs and teachers.

Last year, participants raised $3,600, an amazing feat given the age group and tough economic times.
