WILTON – More than 130 people seeking employment were at the Wilton CareerCenter Monday, ignoring heavy rain and icy roads to attend the first day of interviews for a new retail chain store. According to the manager, 15 to 17 positions are available.

Tractor Supply Company, one of the largest retail chains in the U.S., hopes to open its new 20,000 square foot store on Route 2, across from the Bryant Road T-intersection, this spring. The store is looking for 15 to 17 part-time and full-time employees to work as clerks, cashiers and assistant managers. Employees will be trained in preparation for an anticipated mid-March opening.

Tractor Supply operates more than 800 stores in 40 states and carries feed, fencing, mowers, tools, work clothing and more for farmers, ranchers, rural homeowners and contractors, according to its Web site. In Maine, Tractor Supply stores have been opened in Oxford, Augusta, Gorham and Skowhegan in addition to the new store in Wilton.

Store Manager Peter Castonguay said that Tractor Supply often look to community career centers to staff new stores.

“We have information on our Web site as well,” he said, “but Tractor Supply typically uses the career centers. It’s a great place to utilize the community.”

Wilton CareerCenter Manager Patty Ladd said that a minimum of 130 to 140 applicants were expected Monday.

“We knew it would be a pretty good turnout,” Castonguay said of the strong showing. “This is excellent. Lot of good, hardworking people and we have a lot of great candidates.”

Tractor Supply will be conducting interviews today until 4 p.m., and then on Jan. 26 and Jan. 27 from 8 a.m. until 6 p.m. Wilton CareerCenter is located off of Route 2, in East Wilton.
