Preparation for bridge replacement

1 min read

The Canal Street Bridge in Wilton was temporarily closed last week as highway and sewer department personnel with state Department of Transportation consultants looked at the sewer pipelines running next to the bridge. According to Town Manager Rhonda Irish, the work “is part of the preparation and planning stages for bridge replacement.” Constructed in 1955, the current bridge connects Main Street and Canal Street with a pair of concrete abutments, twin girders and floor beams, but has begun to degrade and rust, rendering it unsafe for heavy loads. Replacement of the bridge is expected in the summer. Irish said she will provide an update at Tuesday’s selectmen meeting, which begins 6:30 p.m. at the town office.
