CARRABASSETT VALLEY – Sugarloaf is working to replace damaged parts of the Spillway East chairlift Tuesday, roughly a week after the derailment incident that sent eight to the hospital.

Sugarloaf officials have not given a timeline for reopening the lift, which runs parallel to Spillway West above a trail that shares its name. The derailment occurred as employees were running the lift at a slow speed, in an attempt to offload passengers after a problem with the cable’s position in a wheel assembly was spotted by a ski patroller. Eight people were transported to Franklin Memorial Hospital after the derailed cable sagged to the slope, with some chairs hitting the ground.

Inspectors from the Department of Professional and Financial Regulation, which oversees the Board of Elevator and Tramway Safety, arrived at the ski resort last week and have begun an investigation into the derailment, assisted by Sugarloaf employees.

Other than Spillway East, the mountain has been open for the past week, running normal operations.

According to Ethan Austin, Sugarloaf communications director, the sheave train on Tower 8 was being replaced with parts ordered from Partek Ski Lifts in New York. Austin also said it would take some time to adjust, test and get the repaired lift inspected.

The schedule for reopening the lift is unknown.
