1 min read

FARMINGTON – Survivors of cancer took the first lap, to the cheers and applause of the crowd.

The American Cancer Society Relay For Life of Franklin County is being held tonight at Mt. Blue High School. The more than 30 teams have raised $26,500 to go toward the ASC, and several had already set up camps around the MBHS football field. The field is surrounded by the track that will be used by teams to complete their relays, which require at least one team member walking at any one time.

Planned events include a scavenger hunt, a doughnut eating contest, various athletic events and dancing competitions. The highlight of the evening is the lighting of the luminaria, paper bags illuminated with a candle and bearing the name of those lost to cancer at 10 p.m.

This year’s top team, according to American Cancer Society, is the Farmington Police Department’s team, Blue Heat, which raised $6,376.

The event is sponsored locally by Franklin Savings Bank and Barclays.
