Rope hope: The leaning silo of Farmington

1 min read

The leaning silo of the Whittier Road in Farmington is a local architectural icon. “I think the silo was put up in the early 1960s,” said farm owner Lawrence Yeaton. The silo has had a pitch to it for years, prompting local school students, who pass by every day on their way to nearby Mt. Blue High School, to bet on when it may fall. The structure is being temporarily supported by a farm tractor. “With the strong winds we had last week, it straightened up some,” Yeaton said smiling. The 80-year-old owner of the Gaylawn Farm plans to take the silo down this summer.

A very long and strong rope attached to the tractor at left is keeping the silo from toppling over (above and below).
