WILTON – Firefighters believe that a small home that burned down early this morning is a total loss, after an unattended cooking stove apparently started the blaze.

Wilton Fire and Rescue Department Captain Kyle Ellis said that they received the call at 1:15 a.m. this morning, arriving on scene immediately thereafter. The house at 110 Weld Road was “fully involved” when the department arrived, and firefighters began efforts to contain the fire and prevent it from spreading to another nearby building roughly 12 feet away. Departments from East Dixfield, Farmington, Livermore Falls and Jay also responded to the fire.

Both buildings are owned by Jan Stinson. She was not present at the time, and the building was unoccupied.

Ellis said that his department believes at this time that a cooking stove was left on in the dwelling which, either through prolonged use or some sort of malfunction, started the fire. The state’s Fire Marshal’s Office is on the scene today.

Crews cleared the scene by 3:30 a.m., Ellis said. He praised the work of both his department and those which responded to the mutual aid calls.

“It was an overall good effort by the department to knock it down and save the other building,” Ellis said. “And the mutual aid is always nice, that helps a lot.”
