A Revolutionary War heroine attends DAR meeting

FARMINGTON – The Colonial Daughters Chapter of the DAR held their January meeting recently at the Fairbanks Union Church. Thirteen members and four guests were present. The business meeting, with Regent Marcia White presiding, started the morning. Old and New Business was discussed. The President General’s Report was read by Kay Seefeldt, the National Defense News by Joanne Page and the Indian Minutes by Connie Hiltz.

At noon the group enjoyed a delicious luncheon served by the ladies of the church.

The guest speaker for the afternoon’s program was Crystal Kwon, president of the State of Maine’s Children of the American Revolution Chapters (CAR), she is a member of the Asa Redington Society –Waterville and currently running for a national office. She is a freshman at Mt. Blue High School. Kwon presented herself in the role of Hannah Weston, a Revolutionary War heroine who carried ammunition through 16 miles of wilderness for the men who were engaged in the first naval battle of the Revolutionary War which took place in Machias.

Maine has five C.A.R. Societies: Moses Greenleaf Society-Bangor, General Dearborn Society-Augusta, Rev. John Fairfield Society-Saco, William Fairfield Society-Portland and the Asa Redington Society-Waterville.

C.A.R. was founded in 1895. After proposing the idea for a children’s branch at the Daughters of the American Revolution Continental Congress, it was promptly chartered by the United_States_Congress. C.A.R., the nation’s oldest, largest, patriotic youth organization, offers membership to anyone under the age of 22. It provides training for young people in true patriotism and love of country, a loyal respect for the Constitution and a reverence for our flag. A person must be lineally descended from someone who served in the Continental Army or gave material aid to the cause of freedom in the American Revolution.

The chapters next meeting will be held on Feb. 22, at the Fairbanks Union Church at 11 a.m. Lunch will be served at noon; the cost is $10 per person. Dain Trafton will present the program in the afternoon “John Dain, American Patriot from Durham, Maine.” The public is invited to attend.

Three guests Laura Kwon, Mary Jane Sturtevant, Beth Stimson and the speaker Crystal Kwon.
