AUBURN – Phi Theta Kappa, an academic organization from Central Maine Community College, donated to SAVES as part of their fundraising efforts for Walk for Hunger.

SAVES was proud and excited to accept a check for $600 from Central Maine Community College’s chapter of Phi Theta Kappa, on Friday, Nov. 19. Jeb Murphy, community outreach and education coordinator for SAVES, was on hand to accept the check and participate in the walk around campus to promote hunger awareness.

SAVES was one of three organizations being granted donations. Phi Theta Kappa also collected clothes and toiletries for Safe Voices, as well as food for a local food pantry. Although there was a small turn out for the event, there was an excellent representation for both the community and the college itself.

Phi Theta Kappa will continue its fundraising efforts until Dec. 15, in hopes to raise even more for the organizations that were chosen. “It’s a great spectrum of causes, and oftentimes one of these issues, sexual assault or domestic violence, can lead to people’s homelessness. It’s a wonderful idea to incorporate not only so many organizations, but also so many different types of donations,” said Murphy of SAVES. “As a member of the SAVES staff and the Franklin County Homeless Coalition, it’s inspiring to see what these students are doing and the change that they can make.

For nearly 30 years, SAVES has helped people in Franklin County, Maine recover from the trauma of sexual violence. Through educational programs designed to reshape common attitudes and beliefs that make sexual violence common, support groups, and advocacy to victims, SAVES hold onto the goal of one day ending sexual violence.
