MEXICO – University College at Rumford/Mexico will be a host site for the Maine Cyber Defense Competition (MECDC) videoconference on Friday, Oct. 22, from 4 to 5 p.m. The videoconference will provide an overview of the MECDC, which is dedicated to encouraging interest by high school students in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) programs, while engaging them in cyber-security activities.

Developed by the University of Maine System’s faculty, the MECDC organizes high school teams that distribute learning materials and experiment in an extra‐curricular inquiry-based learning. The competition allows students to showcase the cyber defense and information technology knowledge they have gained during the early spring.

The videoconference will be broadcast to UC at Rumford/Mexico and to other campuses and centers statewide. Presenters will introduce key MECDC community members, review last year’s competition, chart a timeline for this year’s competition, discuss suggestions from last year’s teams about how best to prepare, and answer participants’ questions.

The deadline for registering for next year’s Maine Cyber Defense Competition is Jan. 30, 2011. Visit http://mecdc.umfk.maine.edu for more information and to download a registration form.
