RANGELEY – On Tuesday, March 1, 2011 at a Rangeley High School Assembly, Colonial Daughters Chapter DAR of Farmington presented the DAR Good Citizen Award to Allison Hammond, daughter of Janet Waugaman and Reggie Hammond of Rangeley. Presenting the award was Chapter Regent Marcia White of Rangeley. Hammond received a Good Citizen pin and a Certificate authorized and signed by the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution President General, Mary Ann T. Wright and Maine Society DAR State Regent, Virginia S. Spiller.
Chairman Judkins, reports that the Colonial Daughters Chapter sponsors seven area schools to recognize excellence in high school seniors. Each school’s faculty nominates several candidates for this honor each year. The person who is chosen to receive the honor must have demonstrated each of the qualities as defined by The National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution to an outstanding degree.
These qualities are dependability (truthfulness, loyalty and punctuality); service (cooperation, courtesy, and consideration of others); leadership (personality, self-control, and ability to assume responsibility); and patriotism (unselfish interest in family, school, community and nation).
Hammond has demonstrated all of these qualities in both school activities and community projects.
She has excelled in academics, earning high honors in all of her classes; she has received numerous honors and awards. She is a member of the National Honor Society and this year was the winner of the National Heisman State of Maine award. She has been Captain of the Varsity Basketball, Varsity Soccer and Varsity Softball teams. She sings our National Anthem at basketball games and public events.
Hammond is a member of the Rotary International Interact Club and has served as President for two years. She has led this group of students and helped to serve her community locally and internationally.
She has organized groups to work with the Cystic Fibrosis Organization, Meals on Wheels for Seniors, senior holiday meals and the Walk for MSA. She is a junior counselor at a non-profit organization called Maine Youth Leadership, teaching high school students what it means to be a leader. She has given over 800 hours of community service during her four years of high school. One of her finest qualities is her compassion and caring of others.
She is currently enrolled in a program and earning a certified nursing assistant certificate. Hammond’s goal is to attend a Maine college and earn a degree in nursing.
