FARMINGTON – With flags at half staff, the Farmington Elks Lodge conducted a Patriot Day service Saturday. The Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks has decreed that Sept. 11 be set apart as a day for Elks to gather to remember the day that changed us all and to remember, thank, and honor the many heroes of that day and the days after.

The service honored those lost on 9/11, as well as the firemen, police officers and emergency medical responders who have been lost in the last year, and those who continue to give their service to their communities. The service was a reminder that we are born, not to be served, but to give service, something our first responders do every day.

Below is part of the oration given:

“Whenever there is tragedy there are heroes. Wherever people are in need, there are those who administer to them. This has long been true but it is also true that we as regular citizens sometimes forget how much we need these heroes and all that they do. Today we are taking time to acknowledge that need, to thank all of you and to remember those among you who have been lost this year.

That so many of you spend your time helping your communities is an acknowledgment of the good in people.

That so many of you spend your weekends in training, away from your families is an acknowledgment of your dedication.

That so many of you come together when one of your own is lost is a testament to your love and respect for each other.”
