FARMINGTON – On Sunday, June 13, the Farmington Elks Lodge conducted their yearly Flag Day observance commemorating the birth of the American Flag at Meetinghouse Park in downtown Farmington. The purpose of the service is to honor our country’s Flag, to celebrate the anniversary of its birth, and to recall the achievements attained beneath its folds.

Local Cub Scout pack 585 assisted by carrying the flags as they were identified and explained by Lodge Esquire Gerry Gilman. The first flag presented, the Pine Tree Flag, was adopted for all colonial vessels, and this was the banner carried by the Continental forces in the Battle of Bunker Hill. Other flags presented included the Snake Flag, the Continental Colors or Grand Union flag and others up to our current flag with 50 stars and the POW-MIA Flag to recognize the plight and demise of a special group of our Armed Services, those who were prisoners of war or still remain missing in action.

The Temple Girl Scouts and Brownie Scouts led the singing of the Star Spangled Banner and God Bless America and entertained by singing Yankee Doodle Dandy.

The Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks are a fraternal order which supports youth, veteran and community activities.
