JAY – Approximately 110 people, graduates of the Jay and Livermore Falls high schools’ Class of 1960, their spouses, and special guests, observed their 50th reunion on Saturday, Aug. 14th.
The day’s events began with separate informal gatherings at midday. Jay classmates met at the home of Jim and Linda Dwinal in Farmington to a potluck barbeque, and those from Livermore Falls met for a shared luncheon at the cottage of David and Sue Record on Sand Pond in Chesterville. Both groups enjoyed the relaxed atmosphere as they caught up on the happenings of the past 50 years.
At 5 p.m., the group gathered in the beautifully decorated dining room of LaFleur’s Restaurant for a social hour and photographs. The formal events began an hour later when David Record welcomed all in attendance. He recalled the decision many years ago to hold a joint reunion, and then expressed appreciation to the committee members from each school who had worked so diligently on planning the celebration, creating the 50th reunion books, decorating the dining room, and all the behind – the – scenes tasks that contributed to the success of the evening.
Special guests Bill Zimmerman of New Hampshire and Jay’s Coach John Taglienti and his wife were introduced. Mr. Zimmerman, LFHS music director during the class’ sophomore and junior years, spoke of his experiences in Livermore Falls and how they triggered his nearly 50 years as an educator and administrator. Coach Tag recalled with fondness the good years and championship games.
Ken Finley gave the introduction to the Class of 1960 reunion and the champagne toast.
A solemn portion of the program was observed when the names of 26 departed class members were read. As each name was spoken a classmate came forward and placed a red carnation in a vase of Queen Anne’s lace. The arrangement was taken to St. Rose of Lima Church on Sunday morning, and one of the table centerpieces was shared with the congregation at the Moose Hill Baptist Church.
The invocation and prayer of thanksgiving were given by Rick McKinney prior to the buffet. Following the meal, memories, some of local historical significance, some humorous, and others poignant were shared.
Rick Bizier won the 50/50 drawing, Leanne Wood won the large framed poster of the group’s senior portraits, and the birthday of Pam Deshais Gagnon was acknowledged.
In closing, Rick McKinney read the Towns Educational Consolidation: “That we become honorary classmates of each other’s class and share our excellent camaraderie forever.”
