Mt. Blue wins club speak out competition

FARMINGTON – Three winners emerged at the Lions Speak Out Contest at Mt. Blue High School last night with three Lions Clubs sponsoring speakers. The contest is being sponsored by Lions Club throughout the state.

Attending last night’s contest were Farmington Lions president, Colon Durrell, Mary Frank, and Speak Out Chairperson Ron Cullenburg, who awarded 1st prize to senior, Abbie Davis, 2nd to senior, Harris Roberts, and 3rd place to senior, Tim Reid.

Attending from the Wilton Lions Club were president Tom White, Tom Withrow, Bob Fast and Speak Out Chairperson Bill Fletcher, who awarded 1st prize to senior, Robert Cesar, 2nd to junior, Sarah Kirkwood and 3rd to junior, Katie Rice.

The Stratton Eustis Lions club attended with Lions Marge McHugh, International Leos Advisory member, and president Bruce Marcoux awarding their 1st place to senior, Rebekah Dunham. There was no 2nd or 3rd place speaker to award a prize.

Also in attendance was Bruce Jellison, the regional chairperson for all the local clubs participating.

Lions Clubs throughout Maine are sponsoring the program to emphasize the importance of public speaking to young people everywhere.

Patricia Franz, Maine District 41 co chairperson said, “I am always so gratified by the speakers and their subjects. This is why I continue to sponsor and coordinate this contest. My sincere thanks go to Ms. Debby Muise, teacher, coach and chief advocate for these wonderful speakers.”

The semi-finals Speak Out challenge for Dunham, Cesar and Davis will be at the Manchester Lions Club (ME) April 1, 6 p.m. where they will compete with contestants sponsored by the new Portland Lions and the Hartland/St. Albans Lions clubs.

Finals will be held April 24, 2010, Saturday at 1 p.m. at Sunday River Resort at the Maine Lions District 41 yearly convention.
