NEW SHARON – The New Sharon Historical Society held its first meeting of the season on April 21, at their new location in the old New Sharon Library, now known as the “Society Building.”

President Dana Dill gave an overview of activities that had taken place since the last meeting in October.  A brief business meeting mentioned donations made in memory of John Neal, a long time member who passed away in January.  These donations were very much appreciated, but members were all saddened by the loss that inspired them.  John will be sadly missed.  The Society is gearing up for a very busy summer, the “settling in” to the new home is still in progress, several old and new projects are yet to be completed and the Museum Room will be open on Saturdays.

Today, more and more people are searching for information on their family’s past and have come to the Society looking for help.  Slowly members have developed a filing system, separated and cataloged various items of interest, set up files for individual families, independent church files, cemetery records and much more.  Because of this they have been quite successful in helping these people obtain some of the information they were looking for.  And at the same time they have become familiar with what they actually have to offer these researchers.

The Society’s mission is to continue its historical research of the town and its people, and to be able to expand their services. This is all an integral part of preserving and safeguarding the history of New Sharon, its past, its present and its future.

Regular meetings are held the third Thursday of the month at 1 p.m. at the Society Building. The next meeting will be held on May 19.  All are welcome to attend and if you wish to become a member of the Society the annual dues are only $5.

During the summer months the Museum Room will be open to the public on Saturdays June 4 through Sept. 3 from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.  If this is not a convenient time for you, call President Dana Dill 778-4044 or 860-8611 to make other arrangements.  The membership looks forward to your visit.
