AVON – The Phillips-Strong Lions Club invites anyone curious about joining the Lions to an Open House at the Avon Town Hall from 1 to 4 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 5. Lions Club members will be available to meet and speak with community members, while sharing refreshments in a relaxed atmosphere. The new club began last spring with 22 members. They welcome the chance to explain what the Lions do and hope to get more people involved.

The Lions are best known for helping provide glasses and services for the visually-impaired, helping the hearing-impaired, and working to educate and fund research about diabetes. An international organization, the Lions’ mission is to “empower volunteers to serve their communities, meet humanitarian needs, encourage peace and promote international understanding.”

The Phillips-Strong Club meets twice a month on the first and third Wednesday evenings, with the first meeting in Strong and the second in Phillips. The Club has accomplished much in their short history, distributing eyeglass boxes and helping many residents in need, including the purchase of new glasses for two Phillips residents. Lions raised $1700 for diabetes in May, held a Field Day in Phillips in July, participated in parades in both Strong and Phillips, ran a “jail” during Phillips Old Home Days, joined in serving food with the American Legion during the Rail Fair in October, and held a very successful auction in November.

Community members are encouraged to come by and meet the Lions, share some food, and learn more about becoming a member. Even those who can’t attend meetings are welcome. Stop by and learn how you can help your community through joining the Lions. For more, contact: Pamela Matthews at 207-639-2630 or email: pam15river@gmail.com
