STRONG – The Strong Public Library held a Pirate Party August 12 at the Forster Memorial Building to celebrate the end of the summer reading program.

Children ages 5 – 12 and their families were invited to celebrate with cake and ice cream. After 8 weeks of reading and water-focused activities based on this year’s theme, “Make a Splash at Your Library, the children were ready to don pirate paraphernalia and play pin the parrot on the pirate. Each child at the party received a pirate hat, cutlass, eye patch, and backpack as well as a gift bag of goodies. Money for the party was part of a Bangor Savings Bank grant the library received in the spring. The grant was also used to purchase books and craft materials that went along with the summer theme of the importance of water.

Jacob White, 12, won a $15 First Place prize for his poster depicting the need to keep our lakes and rivers clean. Jasmine Smith, 13, received a $10 second place prize and third place went to her brother Michael Smith, 9. This poster contest as well as an art contest for young adults, was sponsored by the members of the Porter Lake Association who also donated the prize money.

Delani Littlefield, a junior at Mt. Abram High School, took the $20 prize for the best poster in the Young Adult category. Other prizes donated to the summer reading program this year included gift certificates from Gifford’s, Subway, Narrow Gauge Cinema, Arkay Pizza, Pins & Needles, and Devaney, Doak & Garrett Booksellers. Water for the Saturday morning activity time was donated by Poland Spring.
