At the July meeting of Literacy Volunteers of Franklin & Somerset Counties two new board members were confirmed: Matilda Holt of Farmington, left and Cindie Norton of Industry, at right.

Matilda Holt is a Literacy Volunteers of Franklin and Somerset Counties student who has been studying with Literacy Volunteers for over 10 years. She is proficient in wood working, sewing, and knitting. In fact, she says there is not a craft she does not enjoy doing. She is currently working on a doll house made out of plastic canvas. Holt is a member of the Literacy Volunteers learner’s group New Books New Readers; which she likes attending because “of the people there and getting to read new books.” She joins Cindy Welch as one of the two students on the Literacy Volunteers Franklin and Somerset Counties Board of Directors.

Cindie Norton has lived in Franklin County since 1976 and claims to have waited tables in every restaurant in Farmington. She is an aspiring artist, taking oil painting classes with Joyce Dubay through ABE. She is a diligent gardener, recently taking up beekeeping to further the pollination of her crops. Norton is an avid reader who has been helping Literacy Volunteers set up for the Annual Used Book Sale for many, many years. She can currently be found working at Pete’s Sea Food and Steak, so stop in for a bite.

Literacy Volunteers of Franklin & Somerset Counties has students waiting and is giving a Basic Reading Tutor Training in Farmington at the ABE Office. This will he held on Sept. 29 from 5 to 8 pm and continuing on Saturdays Oct. 3 & 10 from 10am to 3pm. To sign up call 778-3460. There is a $20 fee, but scholarships are available.
