United Way honors campaign accomplishments

FARMINGTON – The United Way of the Tri-Valley Area held its 30th Annual Meeting and Campaign Celebration at the G.H. Bass Room at Franklin Memorial Hospital recently. Attendees celebrated many accomplishments that occurred in 2010 and learned that approximately $340,000 had been raised to date as part of the 2010-11 Campaign.

Lisa Laflin, United Way of the Tri-Valley Area executive director, presents Peter Judkins, president and CEO of Franklin Savings Bank with a United Way of the Tri-Valley Area “Community Impact Award” for going above and beyond in his efforts to improve the lives of greater Franklin County Residents in 2010.

The United Way welcomed six new board members; the following dedicated community members were voted in to serve three-year terms: Jeannine Backus, RSU 36; Jodi Spiller, Verso Paper Corp.’s Androscoggin Mill; Mary Frank, community member; Pam West, The Chocolate Shoppe; Dennis O’Neil, community member; Darryl Wood, LEAP, Inc.

Alison Hagerstrom, Greater Franklin Development Corporation; Chris Kinney, Aramark; Jef Howell, Verso Paper Corp.’s Androscoggin Mill; and Peggy Willihan, community member from Carrabassett Valley; were also recognized for their service to the board in 2010.

Marc Connor, Mill Manager for Verso Paper Corp.’s Androscoggin Mill, and Cherilee Budrick, Mill Communications Manager receive an “Outstanding Achievement Award” from Board President Andrew Sturtevant. Verso Paper was recognized for its stellar efforts at the United Way of the Tri-Valley Area’s 30th Annual Meeting and Campaign Celebration. Verso employees raised just shy of $90,000 in the 2010-11 Campaign.

New officers were also elected: president, Andrew Sturtevant, Franklin Savings Bank; vice president, Jodi Spiller, Verso Paper Corp; treasurer, Gordie Flint, community member; and secretary, Janis Walker, Franklin Community Health Network.

To honor the hard work and dedication of selected individuals and businesses that helped make this year’s Campaign a success, the following awards were bestowed:

Visionary Awards are presented to workplace campaigns that have either contributed for the first time to the United Way in 2010-11, or renewed activity after a number of years. Visionary Awards also include designated grants and gifts from organizations or businesses that were received for the first time in 2010-11. They are: Agilent Technologies (Employees); Barclays (Corporate); Casey Family Services (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program Support); Comfort Inn Farmington-Wilton/LaFrance Hospitality (Employees); Franklin Somerset Federal Credit Union, Farmington Branch (Employees); Johnson & Johnson (Employees); KeyBank Wilton Branch (Employees); New Beginnings (Employees); Otis Federal Credit Union (Pantry Project Support); Pine Tree Orthopedic Lab; Tranten’s (Employees); Farmington Rotary (Community Energy Challenge Support); Western Maine Community Action (Community Energy Challenge Support); Work First, Inc. Workplace Employee Campaign Managers (ECMs) recognized for their dedication, enthusiasm, creativity and exemplary leadership.
Kathleen Murray, Jay School Department; Andrew Sturtevant and Melissa Austin, Franklin Savings Bank; Franklin Community Health Network Team: Employee Campaign Managers Rebecca Ryder, Tom Hagerstrom, and Janis Walker as well as the 39 department ambassadors who lead a tremendously successful campaign.

The United Way of the Tri-Valley Area awarded its second annual Community Impact Award to two recipients. This award acknowledges those who went above and beyond to improve the lives of Greater Franklin County residents in 2010.

Tri-County Mental Health Services (TCMHS) TCMHS offers a wide variety of mental health services, including case management, outpatient counseling, and school-based services throughout western Maine, and right here in Greater Franklin County out of its Farmington office. According to the nomination submitted on its behalf, there is a depth of compassion and a genuine desire to help people and to work with them to alleviate the hurt and trauma that exists, helping forge an improved quality of life. It does not seek glory or undue recognition for the real value lies in improved quality of life, working with others, providing a caring and professional service and being a worthy community partner.

Peter Judkins’ accomplishments and examples of service are many and varied, and they extend far beyond his role as President of Franklin Savings Bank, through which he clearly also impacts the community in many substantial ways. These include: Serving on the Board of Visitors at the University of Maine at Farmington, the Greater Franklin Development Corporation Board, the Ski Museum of Maine Board, and the Franklin Community Health Network/Franklin Memorial Hospital Board. While Peter brings considerable expertise to the above-named boards, he can also be found volunteering his time throughout the community. For example, Peter joins many others at Titcomb Mtn. as often as he can to maintain this family friendly ski-slope for years to come.
