FARMINGTON – Registrations are now being accepted for the next “Prescriptions for Health” presentation featuring Dr. Nancy Cummings, an orthopaedic surgeon affiliated with Franklin Health Orthopaedics. The presentation is part of Franklin Memorial Hospital’s monthly community health information series that is free and open to the public.

On Wednesday, Sept. 15, Dr. Cummings will speak on preventing athletic injuries. The event will take place from 7-8:15 p.m. in the Bass Room and will include light refreshments. There will be ample time for questions and answers.

Topics to be discussed will include training, warm up and stretching, proper attire and equipment, overuse injuries, and when to seek medical attention. Also on hand will be staff from the Physical Rehabilitation Department at Franklin Memorial Hospital including a licensed physical therapist and a certified athletic trainer.

“Overuse injuries account for half of all sports injuries in middle school and high school. Immature bones, insufficient rest after injury, and poor training and conditioning all contribute to overuse injuries,” said Dr. Cummings. “Parents, coaches, and the athletes themselves must be educated in ways to prevent them.”

Registration for the presentation is required. For more information or to register call Jodi Cordes at 779-2451 or 1-800-398-6031, ext. 2451.

This presentation is being held in conjunction with the STOP Sports Injuries campaign initiated by the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine, which includes a comprehensive public outreach program focused on the importance of sports safety—specifically relating to overuse and trauma injuries.
