Dr. Cummings presents on “What I should have done on my Summer Vacation”

FARMINGTON – Registrations are now being accepted for the next “Prescriptions for Health” presentation featuring Dr. Nancy Cummings, an orthopaedic surgeon affiliated with Franklin Health Orthopaedics. The presentation is part of Franklin Memorial Hospital’s monthly community health information series that is free and open to the public.

On Wednesday, May 13, Dr. Cummings will speak on preventing athletic injuries. The event will take place from 6-7:30 p.m. in the Chisholm Room and will include light refreshments. There will be ample time for questions and answers.

According to Dr. Cummings student-athletes who participate in fall sports can reduce their risks of injury by following a regular conditioning program during the off-season. Topics to be discussed include training correctly, warm up and stretching, proper attire and equipment, overuse injuries, and when to seek medical attention.

Children ages 5 to 14 account for nearly 40 percent of all sports-related injuries treated in hospital emergency rooms, according to the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons. “To reduce these injuries, parents, coaches, and the athletes themselves must be educated in ways to prevent them,” said Dr. Cummings.

Registration for the presentation is required, as space is limited. For more information or to register call Jodi Cordes at 779-2592 or 1-800-398-6031, ext. 2592. Light refreshments will be available, as well as child care to those who request it in advance.
