LEAP to host Muskie School workshops on health & wellness for people with disabilities

LEAP, Inc. is hosting two Muskie School Workshops on Health & Wellness for people with disabilities in the Bass Room at the Franklin Health Center – Franklin Memorial Hospital in Farmington.

The first workshop will be for staff members who work with people with disabilities on Thursday, August 20th from 10:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. The second workshop will be for people with disabilities on Tuesday, September 22nd from 2:30 – 4:30 p.m.

As part of the 2009 Happy, Healthy & Well Training Initiative (HHW), Maine’s DHHS and the Muskie School are providing training and technical assistance to staff at four selected agencies that provide residential and community support services to adults with cognitive, intellectual and physical disabilities. LEAP has been chosen as host/pilot agency for Western Maine. The Muskie School is Maine’s distinguished comprehensive school of public policy and management, serving New England and the nation. It is nationally recognized for applying innovative knowledge to critical issues in the fields of sustainable communities, health policy and child and family services. In all of its activities, the School carries on the values and ideas of Senator Muskie.

The Muskie School Happy, Healthy and Well Objectives are to assist staff to improve health and wellness of people with disabilities through learning about more resources in their communities; taking more responsibility for their own health; practicing more healthful daily living habits; trying a variety of activities to increase fitness & activity; supporting better informed choices for healthful eating; being more physically active; creating and following wellness plans and being more involved in their medical care.

LEAP is a Farmington-based private non-profit agency, which has been providing home and residential supports in the community for people with cognitive & intellectual disabilities in Western and Central Maine and their families for twenty-nine years. LEAP provides the following individualized and small group services: Family Support, Information & Referral, Home Support Services for Individuals in their own homes and apartments as well as the D.R.E.A.M. Respite Program for local youth & adults. LEAP is a member of ANCOR – a national organization, which is devoted to enhancing community services for people with cognitive & intellectual impairments and their families, the Maine Association for Community Support Providers, and the Maine Association of Non-Profits and is a designee member agency of the United Way of the Tri-Valley Area.
