FARMINGTON – Elise Gilbert, RN, representing the Neel Foundation, recently donated $3,000 to be used for education for nurses at Franklin Memorial Hospital. The funds will allow for a renowned national lecturer to present on nursing best practices at FMH during hospital week in May; in addition, funds will permit a nurse to attend a national conference with the understanding that he or she will later provide an in-service training to share the information.
Gilbert, whose maiden name is Neel, was employed as a nurse by Franklin Memorial Hospital for 17 years. In making the donation, she said that her family had set up the private family foundation in the 1950s after an infant son had died. Over the years, the foundation that is now run by five siblings, has given to charitable organizations such as Parent-to-Parent, the Franklin County Animal Shelter, and the pediatric unit at Franklin Memorial Hospital. “Philanthropy is in our spirit,” she remarked. “We wanted to give back to our community with an educational plan to reach the most nurses. We are committed to continue this donation for the next three years—if not longer—depending on how well received and accomplished it proves to be.”
“A wide variety of education is required and provided each year to promote knowledge and skill development among our nurses,” said Pam Ernest, chief nursing officer at Franklin Memorial Hospital. “This donation will provide—above and beyond that—for additional nursing education that is grounded in research and known to promote higher quality of care.”
