FARMINGTON – Franklin Health Livermore Falls Family Practice is offering vasectomy services every Friday at its offices with Dr. Michael Rowland performing the procedure.
Dr. Rowland has been performing vasectomies since 1984 and was the first doctor in Maine to use the minimally invasive no-scalpel vasectomy technique. Compared with other vasectomy techniques, the benefits of no-scalpel vasectomy include a shorter operating time, less pain and swelling, and faster recovery.
According to Dr. Rowland, vasectomy is the safest, most effective, and least costly method of permanent birth control available. Dr. Rowland has performed hundreds of vasectomies over the past 25 years, and pays close attention to minimizing pain and down time.
A 15-minute pre-vasectomy exam and counseling visit with Dr. Rowland is required before the procedure is scheduled. During this visit, the procedure is explained along with potential side effects and answers to frequently asked questions. Following this visit, a one-hour appointment will then be made on a Friday morning for the actual surgery. Most insurance plans cover the cost of the procedure.
The vasectomy procedure is done in the office with oral sedation and local anesthesia. “There is a quick recovery,” said Dr. Rowland. “The surgery is done on Friday morning and most men are back to regular work by Monday. And, the procedure has no effect on sexual interest or performance.”
