FARMINGTON – The Franklin County Democratic Committee will hold a public nominating caucus 3 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 4, to select a candidate to run in the special election to fill the vacancy in the State House District 89 (Farmington and Industry) seat. The caucus will take place in the North Dining Hall at the University of Maine at Farmington Student Center on South Street.

In order to vote at the caucus, a person must be a registered voter enrolled as a democrat and must reside in Farmington or Industry. At the caucus, residents of those towns can register to vote, and, if they wish to become a democrat, they may enroll in the Democratic Party at that time.

Caucus attendees may nominate candidates from the floor. So far two people have announced that they are candidates for the nomination: Dennis Haszko and Jeremy Smith, both of Farmington. Nominees will each make a short speech, and then supporters can make brief statements. Voting will take place by secret ballot. Ballots will be counted immediately, and a winner will be declared.

If the winning candidate is going to be a clean elections candidate, he or she will have an opportunity to start collecting the 50 required $5 checks after the vote. Attendees are asked to bring their checkbook in case they want to donate. Cash cannot be accepted.

The special election to fill the House District 89 vacancy will be held on Tuesday, February 3, at polling places in Farmington and Industry.
