EUSTIS – A single-family home on the Village Road was destroyed in a fire Sunday evening, despite the best efforts of local area firefighters.

The blaze was reported at 9:30 p.m. by the residents of the home at 55 Eustis Village Road, which is owned by David and Patricia Ashley. The Ashley family was reportedly home at the time the fire broke out and managed to safely escape the residence with the family dogs, although a pet bird was lost in the blaze.

According to Eustis Fire Chief Malcolm Fearon, between 20 and 30 firefighters from the Eustis, Carrabassett Valley, Kingfield and Rangeley departments responded immediately, but were unable to save the two-and-a-half story house, due to the building’s older construction.

Crews cleared the scene at 4:15 a.m., Monday morning. The cause of the blaze is still under investigation.
