Jay theft suspect surrenders to police this morning

JAY – A 41-year-old man police believe to be involved in the theft of $75,000 from an elderly man turned himself in this morning.

Daren McLean of Jay, surrendered himself to police at 7 a.m. this morning, according to Police Chief Larry White, Sr.

“He walked up to Officer Nick Gulliver who was investigating an accident on Main Street and stated, ‘I’m the man you are looking for,'” White said. Gulliver arrested McLean on the spot and transported him to the Franklin County Holding Facility.

McLean had been a caretaker for the elderly man for a few years. Police said family members of the elderly man began to notice large amounts of money missing from the bank account and called police.

Following an investigation, police issued an arrest warrant for McLean on a felony charge of theft by unauthorized taking yesterday. Police alleged that since 2008 McLean wrote checks in his name and cashed them from the man’s account.
