FARMINGTON – A local man faces charges after he allegedly broke into Mallett Hall, which is providing housing for a two-week jazz camp.

John Michaud, 22, of Farmington, was taken to Franklin County Jail early Sunday morning, charged with criminal trespassing and disorderly conduct following his arrest on the University of Maine at Farmington campus.

According to UMF Public Safety Chief Ted Blais, his office received a call at 1 a.m. on July 18, from some staff members of the Maine Jazz Camp at Mallett Hall. The dormitory is being used to stage a two-week jazz camp for students in the middle and high school range, with adult staffers staying in the same building.

Public Safety was informed by the staff that a man had forced his way into Mallett Hall through a screen window. Officer Ernest Stewart III arrived and searched the area, reportedly discovering Michaud at nearby Purington Hall. He was allegedly attempting to force his way past a locked door. Many UMF buildings, like most college campus facilities, require keycards to enter.

Michaud, at the time of his arrest, was allegedly intoxicated. Blais was uncertain if Michaud was currently a student at UMF, although he had been one in the past.

Blais gave credit to the jazz camp staff, who he said did a “great job.”

“It’s unfortunate,” he said of the arrest, “but this is the reason we have keycards.”

Michaud was released that day on a $3,000 unsecured bond. His first scheduled court date is Sept. 23.
